Why Water Sits in Southwest Florida Yards
Around here it's usually some combination of flat ground, heavy clay or hardpan under the topsoil, and a rainy season that dumps more water in an afternoon than the soil can take. Add a house pad that was built up higher than the surrounding lot, gutters that empty right beside the wall, or a neighbor's property that grades toward yours, and you get a yard that holds water instead of shedding it.

How We Fix Drainage Problems
Every yard is different, but most of what we install falls into a handful of approaches:

- French drains — perforated pipe in a gravel trench that collects groundwater and carries it away from the problem area
- Surface drains and catch basins — grates set at low points to swallow standing water fast
- Downspout extensions and buried leaders — getting roof runoff away from the foundation instead of dumping it at the corner of the house
- Swales and drainage channels — shallow shaped routes that move a lot of water without a pipe
- Dry creek beds — a rock channel that handles runoff and actually looks like part of the landscape
When the trenching is done, we put the yard back. That means sod or seed over the disturbed ground, beds re-edged, and mulch replaced where we had to dig through it. A drainage job that leaves a scar across the lawn isn't finished work.
